Calling All X-Philes!

I'm not going to lie, I am super excited about the return of The X-Files on January 24. Mulder & Scully back on my screen? I'm a happy camper.

I was never a hard-core fan of the show but I did love its early years and I absolutely loved the characters of Mulder and Scully. So when I signed up to do a post here for January I thought it would be fun to list my favorite episodes in celebration of the show's imminent return.

I thought it would be fun, but when I tried making a list I found it wasn't quite so easy. For one, it's been a long time since I've watched so it was hard for me to remember lots of the names and episode summaries. Then, I realized I couldn't possibly narrow down my choices enough and my list would be so long that I'd end up with ten posts instead of one.

So I thought I'd just share some episodes I loved and that have always stuck with me. These are in no particular order.

1. Anasazi

The season 2 finale and the episode that got me hooked on the show. I watched it with a friend who was a fan and got so wrapped up in it I had to watch whatever re-runs I could over the summer so I could get caught up. It wasn't easy to catch up in those days before streaming and DVD sets!

2. Monday

I don't remember most of the later season episodes, but I did love this one from the sixth season. It was shocking and traumatic to see Mulder and Scully hurt/killed in a bank robbery and even more so when it happened over and over again, Groundhog Day style.

3. Paper Hearts

Source

A season 4 episode that dealt with the disappearance of Mulder's sister, this one broke my Mulder-loving heart.

4. Duane Barry/Ascension

Source
Two season 2 episodes that culminated in Scully's abduction.

5, One Breath

Source
The episode that brought Scully back and left me a blubbering mess.

6. Home

It was impossible to forget this season 4 episode about the inbred Peacock family and I think I would probably still jump at the crazy woman under the bed. Yikes!

Were you an X-Files fan? If so, what were some of your favorite episodes? Are you looking forward to the show's return?

Welcome Back, X-Files!

  1. I grew up watching The X-Files, and I got my mom into the series, even though she said she wasn't really watching it but staying up and reading her book. I swear she didn't turn a page the entire time the episode was on. Those are some good choices. One of my favorite episodes is Hollywood A.D. when they were making a movie based on Mulder and Scully and there is this scene where Mulder, Scully, and Skinner are in separate bathtubs and talking on the phone to each other. I also like Squeeze and Tooms. The idea of Eugene Tooms influenced my creation of the monster in my Once upon a Nightmare collection. I'm so looking forward to the new season.

    2. Oh I can't believe I forgot Squeeze and Tooms! Tooms was such a great monster, and how cool that he influenced your own character. I am getting more and more excited for the return. :)

  2. I was a HUGE X-Files fan and I can't wait until the new series starts. It's hard to pick one episode. I always looked forward to seeing the Cigarette Man. For some reason, I remember this one episode of a giant underground fungus that captures Scully and Mulder and makes them dream while slowly digesting them.

  3. This household is looking forward to the return of Mulder and Scully. Yup, Cigarette Man too. I really enjoyed episodes about creatures. My husband unit loves any episode with Scully in it.

  5. Huge, crazy fan of The X-Files. I have been doing the #201daysofthexfiles global re-watch. (I'm only a few episodes behind). It's been amazing to watch the show all over again. I've hit the 9th season which is terribly painful to watch, but I'm willing to go the distance. Watching now, as an adult and a writer, I see so much more than I used to. Conspiracies and monsters aside, the relationship Mulder & Scully built, the jokes, the fights, the snark, the trust...it's just brilliant to see it all develop. The dialogue was always spot on. Even watching the technology change from 1993 to 2002 is surreal. I'm really looking forward to the new episodes. I would list my favorites, but it would take up too much space! Enjoy!

    1. Oh, I didn't know about that global rewatch - how fun! I can imagine how different it is to view the show as a writer in addition to a fan. I know I always loved the dialogue! And too many amazing characters to name.

  6. My partner loved it, and watched the first few series religiously. I saw some of it because of him, but no. Not for me.
    Out of step again.

    1. Not out of step at all! There are tons of huge hits that aren't for me so I can totally relate.

  10. I am so looking forward and I am an X-Files fan! The inbred one was crazy which is why they have never reshown it. I loved the ones with Charles Nelson Reilly and there was a funny episode where they were being based on a movie. I loved their chief guy-he bald (mostly). It was hard to keep it all in one's head.

    1. Oh, yeah, I loved Skinner too - I think that was his name. I hope he will be back for the revival. I can't remember the Reilly episode but I think I remember the movie. There are just so many!
